• Title: Differential Calculus via Commutative Algebra

   

• Abstract: The methods of differential calculus, invented by Cauchy, are based on epsilon-delta inequalities. These are special to analysis, and they do not verbatim extend to algebra. But by taking inspiration from the even older work of Leibniz, modern mathematicians have isolated the purely algebraic essence of differentiation to set up an algebraic theory of differential calculus, and this is used in algebraic geometry and number theory. This talk will give an elementary introduction to this algebraic approach, with illustrated examples.
