  • Travel Information

Pune is well-connected to most cities in India by flights, trains, and roadways. There are also direct flights to Pune from Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and Dubai (Air India Express). However, most international passengers may find it convenient and cheaper to fly into Mumbai (= Bombay) and then take an airport shuttle to Pune (journey time: approx. 3 hours). Please note that most international visitors will require a visa for India (just as Indian citizens require a visa to visit their country), and also that December-January tends to be a busy period in terms of travel to and from India, especially from Europe and North America; thus, it is advisable to book early. Here are some useful links.

  • List of Indian Consulates and Embassies Worldwide (where visa application can be submitted)
  • Wiki Travel Page for Pune
  • Some India based online travel portals:
CleartripMakeMyTripYatraExpedia and Travelocity have their Indian counterparts: Expedia.co.in and Travelocity.co.in
  • Indian Railways online train reservation portal: IRCTC (Signup is needed; some of the above portals do train bookings too).
  • Railway Timetables and Maps
  • KK Travels have a shared airport cab transfer service from Mumbai airport to Pune, and back. [Current Cost: 650 Indian Rupees or about 15 US dollars, each way]
  • Chauffer-driven private cabs for the trip from Mumbai airport to Pune, or for travel within Pune or within Mumbai are available, for example, from eCabs.in [Prices starting 1900 Indian Rupees or about 43 US dollars, each way, for the airport transfer]
  • Jet Airways have two direct flights from Mumbai to Pune (at 09.55 and 16.35) and back (at 11.10 and 17.40). The flight leaves Mumbai from the domestic terminal which can be reached in about 30 minutes by a free shuttle bus from the international terminal. The flight duration is about 35 minutes and the current lowest cost is about 100 US dollars each way.
  • Air India Holidays is a good option for those planning a touristic visit to other parts of India before or after the conference.
  • The official currency is Indian Rupee (currently, 1 US dollar is about 46 Rupees and 1 Euro is about 60 Rupees); see an online Currency Converter for latest information). Credit cards are widely accepted, but not everywhere! It may be advisable to change at bank ATM's or at official exchange bureaus at the airport.
  • Pune Weather (should be pleasant in December)

Abhyankar, Marshall Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Industrial Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University, USA, will offer a short course on algebra and algebraic geometry, primarily for M.Sc. level students, at Pune, India during December 9, 2010 - January 5, 2011. Applications are invited from interested students in India by e-mail or regular post to the address below.

Selected participants will be offered round trip III-AC train fare from their place of work/hometown to Pune by shortest route, and provided free accommodation in the student hostel at Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana, Pune, and paid a subsistence allowance.
