With a view to locate and then nurture Mathematical talent among
school going children in India, an elaborate scheme has been
drawn up by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
Under this scheme, Regional Mathematical Olympiads (RMO) are
held in 20 regions covering the whole country. RMOs
are usually held in every region sometime between August 15 and
December 7. More information and the exact date can be obtained
from the concerned regional coordinator. The list of all regional
coordinators is given at the end of this write up. Primarily , Students
of Std. XI and XII (first and second year of Junior College) can
appear for RMO.
But the regional coordinator may permit some bright students of Std. X
or IX also to take the RMO. The top 15 to 30 students from
each region (depending upon the quota for the region) selected in
RMO-2006, including at most 6 students from std. XII, will be
invited to write
the Indian National Mathematical
Olympiad (INMO) which will be held on February 4, 2007.
There is no fixed syllabus for RMO or INMO. Problems
asked are of a non-routine type but within the capacity of a
bright talented 15 year old student.
The top 30 students of INMO (called INMO Awardees) would be invited to a Summer
Camp in May-June, 2007. All these students, and also
INMO-awardees of the previous years who are still pre-university students
and who show good performance in postal coaching during 2006-2007, would be
eligible to be selected to the Indian team for participation in International
Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) which will be held in July 2007 in Vietnam .
The selection of the team will be done during the Summer Camp.
INMO awardees may take up any branch of study in future and
if they give evidence of their continued interest in mathematics ,
they will be eligible for NBHM scholarships.
